Mercury Toxicity from Amalgam Fillings
Heavy metal toxicity from silver-mercury amalgam dental fillings
is so common that it is often overlooked (if your fillings aren't
white or gold, then you have amalgams that have mercury in them.)
More than half my clients have these fillings, and so I think it's
important to discuss the facts about mercury amalgams in more detail,
and the pros and cons of removing them. Heavy metal toxicity can
affect neurological, emotional, energetic and digestive function,
and is a major factor in chronic illness.
The American Dental Association contends that amalgam fillings are
safe, and that the mercury in them is stable and does not leach.
Many medical researchers and practitioners disagree. The counterview
is that mercury in fillings leach out over time as mercury vapor
that can affect the nervous system, immune system, gastrointestinal
tract, organs, and cause fatigue, sleep disturbances, concentration
problems, memory problems, lack of initiative, and irritability.
A highly rated BBC program interviewed numerous international experts
who concluded that mercury in dental fillings is unstable and relates
to a variety of health problems, including chronic fatigue and Alzheimer's.
The A.D.A. purchased the American broadcast rights to the program
and shelved it. Currently, the lead toxicologist of the World Health
Organization has openly stated that he believes mercury is unsuitable
for dental materials, and Canadians have opened a class action lawsuit
arguing that the Canadian government knew of the dangers from amalgam
fillings but failed to warn the public. Elemental mercury is the
2 nd most deadly metal on the planet, and everyone agrees that pregnant
women should not be exposed to it in any way. Meanwhile, dental clinics
are the third largest users of mercury and are also major polluters
into municipal wastewaters. The A.D.A. estimates that dentists place
approximately 70 million mercury-containing fillings in people's
mouths each year, using 34 tons of mercury in the process. See "What
Patients Don't Know," www.talkinternational.com .
If you have amalgam fillings in your mouth and you're worried, you
might want to consider the helpful information below:
- Silver-mercury amalgam next to gold accelerates the deterioration
of amalgams because of the positive-negative charge (gold is +
and silver is -). If this is your situation you might want to seriously
consider removing the amalgam sooner than later.
- The type of mercury fillings used since the '70s (non-gamma-2
high copper) releases more mercury than the older style
amalgam fillings.
- Gum chewing increases the release of mercury vapor, as does grinding
your teeth.
- Some studies have shown a correlation between magnetic radiation
from computer screens and the deterioration of amalgam
fillings.
- Studies show removal of amalgams tends to increase health over
a period of time, not necessarily immediately. It can take
6 to 12 months after removal to show reduction or elimination
of classic mercury poisoning symptoms. Whether you are symptomatic
or asymptomatic, you can benefit from knowing you have removed
a source of toxic exposure from your system.
- If you choose to have your amalgam fillings removed, only do
so with a qualified dentist trained in the IAOMT mercury
amalgam removal protocol. A well-meaning dentist who doesn't follow
this protocol can end up exposing you to more mercury than
if you had left the fillings in your teeth. The protocol uses an
oxygen nose mask, face and chest cover, special suction and air
filtration equipment. Richard Hansen, DDS, in Fullerton has an
excellent reputation in the LA area, as does Dr. James Rota in
West LA , though I believe Dr. Rota has recently retired. Also
see the jigsawhealth.org website for a list of qualified dentists.
- Our bodies have a natural way of detoxifying low levels of heavy
metals that can be aided by specific foods such as high
quality chlorella, cilantro, and wheat grass. Sweating also helps
the lymphatic system cleanse (wipe the sweat off you), as does
bouncing on a small trampoline for lymphatic stimulation ( www.freedomspring.com ).
- Chelating agents that bond with heavy metals such as DMPS can
be used to actively chelate heavy metals out of the body.
Some methods are experimental, and must be closely monitored by
an experienced and qualified MD. ( www.medical-library.net/sites/_DMPS.html )
Dr. Hans Gruenn does DMPS chelation in West LA ( www.drgruenn.com ).
I encourage all my client to gather information on mercury toxicity
from amalgam fillings and study the options for removal for total
bodymind wellness. I've listed two excellent resources below. Additional
links on the topic can be found on www.onebodymind.net along
with other Health Alerts . See Upcoming
Events for information about a monthly public lecture on
mercury amalgam toxicity, removal, and chelation hosted by Drs. James
Rota and Hans Gruenn in West LA.

International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology is a Canadian
membership organization for dental, medical and research professionals
who seek to promote mercury-free dentistry, and raise the standards
of scientific biocompatibility in dental practice.
www.jigsawhealth.org
Jigsaw Health Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated
to helping needy individuals with chronic health conditions. The
initial focus is on subsidizing the removal of dental mercury amalgams,
a significant factor in chronic health conditions, and replacing
them with non-toxic materials. |
