Theory Behind Bodymind Integration

The new paradigm of the bodymind changes our understanding of how we learn, how we heal, and how we change. Robert Cooper Ph.D. in his bestseller Get Out of Your Own Way points out that we have not one brain, but four brains–the brain in our head, the brain in our gut (the enteric nervous system), the brain in our heart, and the one in our spine. All brains together make one collective brain. The integrated input from the collective brain creates our highest intelligence and adaptability and the path of our greatest evolutionary potential (155).

The parts of the collective brain that have long been unappreciated and unrecognized connect to the limbic-related areas of the brain in our head that give rise to what Cooper calls “emotional intelligence” (156). I prefer to call it bodymind intelligence; some people call it intuition. Whatever you call it, its influence is vast. Cooper comments that “as much as 95% of thought, emotion and learning occur somewhere beyond the conscious mind” (158). Access to this 95% is through the body and emotions, not the rational, neo-cortex where spoken and written language are generated. That's why we all know people who voraciously read self-help books, but can't quite seem to make tangible lifestyle changes in the areas they know need to change. It's also the limit of traditional talk psychotherapy, which can be excellent for intellectual insight and awareness, but can access the unconscious only through language which resides in the neo-cortex, the newest part of the brain in our head. Candace Pert, Ph.D. in Molecules of Emotion points out that the unconscious is the body. Therefore, we can best directly access the unconscious, where the majority of learning takes place, through the body itself, and through the circuitry that connects spine, gut and heart to the much older limbic part of the brain. In my practice as a Certified Rubenfeld Synergist, I use touch, talk and movement simultaneously to involve 100% of our native intelligence to produce the immediate emotional, embodied feedback that medical studies of cardiac patients show drive large lifestyle changes that last (281). The Rubenfeld Synergy Method® is a psychophysical re-educational method that is in alignment with the latest theories of how the bodymind works.

Meditation and the Peace Movement

Vedic meditation has a long-standing affiliation with modern peace movements. The man known now as Guru Deva, legendary for spending 40 years alone meditating in a forest, came out of his retreat for the non-violent independence movement that ended British colonial rule in India in 1947 without bloodshed, and that was a model for Martin Luther King during the ‘60s civil rights movement. Guru Deva's student, the man now known as Maharishi, came to the US to teach meditation and non-violent consciousness during the Vietnam War. Maharishi's student, Thom Knoles, who took up the study of meditation at age 15 and became a conscientious objector during Vietnam, helped organize over 60,000 meditators in Manila in the months leading up to the People's Revolution that ended the 25-year military dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos in 1986. Thom Knoles has personally taught over 11,000 people how to meditate world-wide. After 30 years teaching meditation in Australia, he has returned to the U.S., and gives a free public seminar on meditation and its benefits on the first Sunday of every month when he is in the Los Angeles area at 5pm at Santa Monica Power Yoga, Studio West, in the meditation room.

Onebodymind Summer Cleanse & Energize Breakfast

This is my favorite cleansing summer breakfast routine. Try it for fresh clean energy in the morning.

Start by drinking a cup of boiled fresh spring water that has been Granderized and cooled to drinking temperature. The energized water cleanses and hydrates the bowel to prepare for absorption. Meditate for 20 minutes. After meditation, take a tablespoon of Liquid B Complex and wait 10 minutes for absorption. Follow up with 1 capful of colloidal minerals mixed with black cherry juice. After a few minutes, prepare a protein shake with hemp protein powder, super green food, almonds soaked overnight in spring water, an organic banana, a de-pitted date, golden flax seeds, raw chocolate , a tablespoon of Udo's Choice Oil Blend , and organic almond milk . Keep the shake at room temperature to be gentle to your spleen. Enjoy a great vibe all day!

Mercury Toxicity from Amalgam Fillings

Heavy metal toxicity from silver-mercury amalgam dental fillings is so common that it is often overlooked (if your fillings aren't white or gold, then you have silver amalgams that have mercury in them.) The American Dental Association contends that amalgam fillings are safe, and that the mercury in them is stable and does not leach. Many medical researchers and practitioners disagree. A highly rated BBC program interviewed numerous international experts who concluded that mercury in dental fillings is unstable and relates to a variety of health problems, including chronic fatigue and Alzheimer's. Currently, the lead toxicologist of the World Health Organization has openly stated that he believes mercury is unsuitable for dental materials, and Canadians have opened a class action lawsuit arguing that the Canadian government knew of the dangers from amalgam fillings but failed to warn the public. Elemental mercury is the 2 nd most deadly metal on the planet, and everyone agrees that pregnant women should not be exposed to it in any way. Clients I've worked with who have heavy metal toxicity often struggle with fatigue and digestive problems on a physical plane, and fogginess, confusion, frustration, and irritability on an emotional plane.

If you have amalgam fillings in your mouth and you're concerned, see Upcoming Events for date, time and place of a monthly public lecture on mercury amalgam toxicity, fillings removal, and chelation hosted by Drs. James Rota and Hans Gruenn in West LA. To read about other issues that may affect your wellness, see Health Alerts.
