TRANSPERSONAL CONSCIOUSNESS: CAN PRESIDENTS CRY?

anxiety

As a somatic therapist who facilitates somatic-emotional releases in my clients, and as an educator who teaches bodyworkers that emotional releases are a natural function of our biophysiology, I am amused by the recent media hooplah over Hillary Clinton allowing a wave of emotion to move through her speech in front of a small group of women voters in New Hampshire before her primary victory. Clinton was quickly depicted as both “crying and breaking down” and faking crying to get votes. I consider myself a crying expert of sorts, my business is reading people’s emotions, and what I saw was not a cry per se, but a wave of authentic feeling about what it means to Hillary Clinton to run for President in this election. In humans, who are by the way the only species to cry emotional tears, emotions fire the pre-motor cortex which directly control the facial muscles. For humans, facial expressions of emotion communicate authenticity. Check out the footage for yourself if you haven’t seen it . And let’s face it, after Benazir Bhutto’s recent assassination while campaigning against her military-affiliated opponent Pervez Musharraf, anyone can see that Hillary Clinton is brave to even run. I think we all need to give her that much, whether we vote for her or not. The question that was posed by the media was whether we could have a Commander-in-Chief who is a woman. The real question is: can we have a President that is not primarily a military commander who does not see the world as a battlefield and diplomacy as war gaming? That is the real question of the day-both for the United States, and for Pakistan. As the Bhuddist writer Pema Chodron says, there is always a crucial moment when we have to choose between peace and conflict. Choosing peace may mean choosing political leaders who can still feel.

MIND HEALTH: BRAIN-EARTH RESONANCE WITH MEDITATION

eeg-theta There’s a new industry emerging today marketing brain entrainment technologies to help people alter their brain wave frequencies. But the simple most direct way to do this is meditation (sitting still and becoming aware of one’s consciousness). We know a lot about resonance now, the phenomenon that all things in the universe tend to vibrate at their own “natural” frequency, including the earth in tandem with the vibration of its ionosphere. Including us. What happens when we entrain our brains to vibrate at the same frequency as the earth? Two things happen. First our brain wave frequency drops from lower beta to alpha frequency, and then drops lower to theta frequency. In theta frequency, we experience moments when our frequency synchs with the frequency of our location in the universe, and for a fractal of time the gates are opened to be one with earth consciousness. earthWith meditation practice, when we can hold ourselves in this state of Extremely Low Frequency, that vibration transduces to the whole nervous system, not only the brain but through the spinal cord to every neuron touching every pore of skin; and universal consciousness permeates the entire bodymind. Unity consciousness is when our cellular vibrations become aligned with the frequency in the environment, and we experience the expanded Field of the Universe beyond. Experiencing such higher states of consciousness is a natural part of being human, and is a source of ultimate creativity and blissful calm. In Primordial Sound Meditation, a mantra is given to you that entrains your brain’s frequency to resonate with that of the earth at the time of your birth.

PHYSICAL BODY: THE GUT-BRAIN CONNECTION

potbelly Your gut and brain are linked in four ways. First, the gut absorbs the food nutrients that feed the brain, so if you eat a poor diet of overcooked food lacking minerals and vitamins that you can’t digest or a diet full of sugar that has no real nutritional value, you can create brain starvation. It is logical to assume that the well-known national epidemic of obesity in the U.S. goes along with an epidemic of brain malnutrition (and by the same logic, corresponds to an epidemic of neurological and neurodevelopmental disorders). Second, an inflamed gut full of yeast (yeast feeds off sugar), bad bacteria and fungus produces toxic waste products that can in turn toxify the brain. Third, the gut makes many of the neurotransmitters used by the brain. Neurotransmitters are made from small peptide chains of amino acids (proteins), so you can see how a protein deficiency can cause neurotransmitter deficiencies in the brain. Finally, 20% of the gut is made of the same neurons that you find in the brain-meaning that your gut is your brain. People dealing with neurological distress of any kind (from depression or foggy headedness to irritability, anxiety or memory loss to more defined syndromes such as obsessive compulsive disorder, bulimia, autism, ADHD, Asperger’s, Alzheimers, or bi-polar disorder) will benefit from a gut cleanse, elimination of sugar and hard-to-digest processed foods, and a diet of fresh, healthy balanced whole foods. When you bring your gut into balance, you balance your brain too.
neurona The fundamental principles of gut-brain health are simple: choose fresh organic foods, whole fruits and vegetables, fresh beans and peas, whole grains (if you are not allergic to grains, and many people are), enough proteins (to assure you can create enough neurotransmitters), and enough good essential fats like fish oil, coconut and olive oil, and seeds and nuts. Avoid refined sugar that feeds yeast overgrowth, and avoid too many carbs that turn into sugar during digestion. Avoid foods that have been genetically over-engineered or that have additives that many people have allergic gut reactions to, such as wheat and soy and dairy that can inflame your intestines and render your gut unable to absorb nutrients. Don’t poison your gut by drinking chlorinated tap water. Eat raw foods or lightly cooked foods whenever possible (owning a blender helps). And take two supplements: a liquid mineral supplement because much of our soil has been stripped of minerals by agriculture, and acidophilus to cultivate the good bacteria that defines gut health. Some people also take digestive enzymes when they eat cooked food, if their own digestive enzymes are weak. If you know it’s time to do a gut cleanse, there are many popular programs available, such as Dr. Schultze 5-day Detox Bowel and Blessed Herbs Colon Cleanse (Warning! visit this site only if you can handle testimonial pics of bowel plaque!)

The PSM program for teaching meditation was organized by Dr. Deepak Chopra and his partner Dr. David Simon, who have been practicing and teaching meditation for over 30 years. I am happy to be certified by the Chopra Center to teach this technique for quieting the mind, releasing stress from the body, and increasing adaptation energy that comes from the 5000-year old Vedic tradition that birthed yoga and ayurvedic medicine. The primordial sound is based on the vibration of the universe at the time of your first breath. The practice is done twice a day for 20-30 minutes.
