The term Mindfulness derives from the term ‘Sati’ in the Pali language indicating a specific mental factor and a quality of consciousness. These characteristics can be developed through meditation and in conjunction with other factors such as concentration and stability.
According to Jon Kabat Zinn, scientist and founder of the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) protocol, Mindfulness is a way to develop awareness of the present moment, moment by moment, in a non-judgmental, non-reactive and ‘open heart’ way.
Mindfulness allows you to:
- Improve executive attention and concentration
- Improve body awareness
- Approach emotional reactions in a non-judgmental way
- Change your perspective of yourself
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Increase satisfaction in romantic relationships
- Increase cognitive flexibility
- Feel a greater sense of physical and mental well-being
